Steering Committee Report - Oct 15 2026

LLM policy referendum

One thing I want to reflect on in this report that I think is particularly important is the discussions around asking the community to vote on LLM policy as part of a referendum. The proposal arrises from rhendric in his moderator role. His analysis (hoping I am not misrepresenting it) was that LLM usage in nixpkgs (even after the AI policy by the core team) is creating situations of conflicts and should be dealt with before it creates a deeper rift. The proposal was then to submit a proposal similar to the the Gentoo AI Policy to a referendum held during the next SC elections. The rationale here was that a community vote would have more chance to settle the question in a way that would be accepted widely, and would have a chance to settle the conflict.

In my opinion this was a great opportunity to show working governance: experts (the moderation team) identify a potential problem in their scope and inform the SC, SC follow through on the recommendation and identify the correct level of delegation of the decision (here: a community vote). Unfortunately, after extensive discussions on the matter, the referendum was not accepted.

NixCon

Was really happy to meet some of you back at NixCon, and be able to have interesting discussions about different visions of the project!

End of term and elections

This is my last report for my 2025-2026 SC term. I appreciated the trust that community members have shown towards me. I am inviting everyone to participate to the vote to elect our future SC!
